Are YOU prepared to bring your Allergic child back-to-school?

August 22, 2008

The new school year is here. And while, it is a time of much needed breaks for moms and caregivers alike. There’s a lot of work to be done before the kids go back to school. Have you seen the list of school supplies? It takes up a whole 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper! For moms of Food Allergy children it is a very stressful time. New school year, new teacher, and sometimes new procedures. You’re probably inundated with more school forms and medical authorization forms than you know what to do with.

What’s All the Fuss About?
Right from the beginning, you’re setting the stage for the rest of the school year. You need to make sure everything is covered up front. Spend the extra time to make sure you’ve added all the specifics, it’s easier to take away than it is to add things on! The first step, is that you have all the proper paperwork and your agenda filled out before your meeting with your child’s support group.

The Support Group
Is a group of people your child comes in contact with during the time that he/she is at their facility. They are: Directors/Principals, Primary Teachers, Nurses, Guidance Counselors, Specials: Phys. Ed, Library, Computer, and Art. Please don’t forget your Cafeteria Director, Lunch Aides, Janitors and Bus Drivers. And, last but not least, are the peers in your child’s classroom. Sounds like a lot of people? It is and you should breathe a great big sigh of relief, that you have that many people on your side. Now, all these people need to be brought up to speed on the condition of your child and procedures you’d like them to implement.
